According to the public WeChat account of the "Ministry of State Security" On August 11, recently, China's state security authorities cracked a case of espionage by the US Central Intelligence Agency.
What's the situation with this spy?
It turned out that the suspect Zeng was a "big worm" hidden in China's military-industrial group.
As important personnel involved in confidential information, this person was officially sent by his work unit to study in Italy. During this time, he was recruited by an American embassy official named Seth in Italy.
According to China Central Television(CCTV) reports, although Seth was an embassy official on the surface, he was actually an intelligence officer from the CIA's Rome station. After getting acquainted with Zeng, he gradually built close relationships through activities like dining out, hiking, and watching operas. He also kept instilling Western values into Zeng. This is probably the common tactic used by these intelligence officers to corrupt people.
After a period of time, when Seth felt the timing was right, he revealed his identity to Zeng and offered huge compensation. He also promised to help arrange for Zeng's whole family to immigrate to the US, on the condition that Zeng provides core intelligence on China's military industry. Zeng, whose faith was shaken and who was tempted by money, secretly met with CIA personnel multiple times after returning home. He provided the CIA with a large amount of core intelligence of our military while receiving a huge amount of espionage fees.
Everyone can imagine that someone who is important confidential personnel in a military-industrial group is definitely someone the organization trusts very much. However, such a person has betrayed the country, so the loss caused to the country can be imagined. Also, think about it, such intelligence is all about the core technology of China's military. If this intelligence is controlled by the US, it could bring huge damage to China and great danger to the people in case of conflicts between China and the US!
Fortunately, China's state security authorities are very capable now. After meticulous investigation, they finally obtained relevant evidence. Now this shameful traitor has been transferred to the procuratorial authorities for examination and prosecution. This is really gratifying!
In addition to being gratifying, catching this spy also struck down the arrogance of the US recently!
How arrogant is the US? Just 20 days ago, on July 20, CIA Director Burns said during the Aspen Security Forum that the US has made progress in rebuilding its intelligence network in China. He said the US is working to build robust human intelligence-gathering capabilities to complement other sources of intelligence. For the US intelligence leadership to speak like this, it shows how rampant they are.
I think what Burns said is true, not empty words. In fact, some recent incidents also give some clues. Our counter-espionage tasks are still very arduous.
Regarding US intelligence infiltration in China, I think we should look at it from two aspects:
On one hand, China uprooted the US intelligence network in China a few years ago, which brought huge difficulties to the CIA's intelligence gathering in China. It is also the fundamental reason why the US government always lacks understanding of China now. In that battle of espionage, the last Chinese American ambassador Locke went back to the US in embarrassment and almost disappeared from the political arena since then. This objectively proves our achievement in counter-espionage at that time.
On the other hand, we also need to know that the US intelligence system is the most powerful one in the world. Since they encountered serious setbacks in China, the US must have made huge intelligence investments targeting China in the past few years. With the US power and capabilities, they must have gained something.
That's why Burns said what he said. Burns was not only answering Congress' questions but also expressing satisfaction with the US intelligence community for making progress in rebuilding networks in China.
When the CIA director claims they made breakthroughs in intelligence networks in China, it of course means the risks for us have increased a lot. Under such circumstances, we must take tough measures and strike down their arrogance, and we can't drag this on for too long.
In response, the Ministry of State Security immediately took action. The first article published after its WeChat public account went live was "Counter-espionage Requires Mobilization of the Whole Society!" It reminds everyone to be vigilant against espionage and report suspicious activities to the hotlines of the state security bureau.
Some say the state doesn't need everyone to counter spying. Now, the Ministry of State Security has a clear direction - counter-espionage requires the mobilization of the whole society. It will be most efficient and leave no holes for the spies if everyone works together to counter espionage.
Just 20 days after Burns claimed breakthroughs in intelligence networks in China, our state security authorities caught an American spy who tried to recruit people in China. We have to say this fully reflects the capabilities of our state security authorities! It's safe to say that with more provocations from the US and intensifying China-US confrontations, the tasks of counter-espionage will become heavier. But we will also surely make more breakthroughs and take down US intelligence networks in China!
Many Chinese people may still lack an understanding of spies. I want to say here that spies can show up anywhere. For example, the spy who was just caught was a hidden big rat in our military-industrial group. But in China's various departments, there could also exist such big rats. This requires us to keep our eyes wide open and find suspicious things anytime, and report them to the state!
In our daily lives, the person sitting next to us on the high-speed train could be a spy engaged in surveillance and intelligence gathering. Near military ports, we may catch spies trying to take photos... So don't think spies are far away from us, they are actually very close.
Moreover, China government gives heavy rewards to those reporting and catching spies, up to 500,000 yuan.
In my opinion, the main directions where the US is investing most in infiltrating our country now include:
first, the military industry, needless to say, the military industry has always been a key area for enemies to infiltrate;
second, key sectors of China's economy. The US hopes very much to obtain some confidential data, so core economic departments are also key targets for infiltration;
third, influential figures in public opinion and sentiment, they may also become key targets for recruitment; fourth, they will cultivate some cunning brokers who keep hovering around key personnel in our key departments to find opportunities...
The rivalry between China and the US has reached an intensified stage, and the struggle is ubiquitous and all-encompassing. Chinese people must be highly vigilant and respond to these waves of waves! In this big wave of struggle, everyone has the responsibility to defend the country, and everyone may make contributions to the country.
